General FAQ
-
All clays and glazes available to students at Grit Ceramics Studio are lead free and non-toxic upon being fully fired. Provided they do not have cracks on the inside, students’ work will be food safe and ready to use upon pickup. While our clays and glazes are dishwasher safe, we recommend hand washing them to make sure your pieces last a long, long time.
-
Pottery is a messy business and students are likely to get at least a little dirty during classes, so we recommend you wear comfortable clothing that can handle a bit of dirt. Clay does typically come out of clothing easily in the wash, but darker clay bodies and underglaze can leave a light stain on light clothes. Shorter skirts, dresses, and heels, can make it uncomfortable to sit at the wheel.
-
We have done our best to make Grit an accessible space. We do ask that requests for specific accommodations be made in advance (Click here) so instructors can make any necessary adjustments to the class. Some classes and activities may be more challenging for differently abled students, and we will do our best to create an experience that will be comfortable and fulfilling for all who enter the building.

We love to help kids learn how to work in clay! We offer summer camps for a variety of age groups and accompanied children are welcome in mini classes.
While children under the age of 6 will typically have a more difficult time in wheel throwing classes, we do offer handbuilding classes that are fun and accessible to a wider range of ages.
That being said, Grit Ceramic Studio cannot accommodate unaccompanied minors in mini classes or workshops. It is a functioning ceramic space and as such, has many potential dangers on the premises. Instructors will be fully focused on teaching their students and cannot be responsible for keeping an eye out for wandering children. All solo participants must be 18 years of age or older, anyone under that age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
We do kindly request that customers not bring children into the space under the age of 4.

We aren’t planning on offering memberships at the moment since we’re still in the early stages of operating our business and want to see what we can handle.

At the moment we’re still gauging how much work we are capable of moving through our kilns and our class workflow. If it turns out we can accommodate outside firings we absolutely will! Updates regarding outside firings will be posted to our instagram @GritCeramicStudio

Instructors typically have student work finished and ready for pick up 4-6 weeks after the date of the original mini class. Paint-Your-Own-Pottery pieces typically take about 4 weeks.
As a note, Grit Ceramic Studio is a shared communal space, with many other workshops, classes, and programs using the same facilities, so sometimes things can get a little backed up! During certain times of the year, such as the winter holiday season and the end of summer, there may also be a higher influx of work flowing through the space than usual, which may slow the firing process down for some pieces. If a student’s pieces are taking longer than the typical time frame, instructors will reach out to communicate with students to inform them where their pots are in the process and when they can expect them to be ready for pick up.
-
Not a local? Not a problem! You can inform your instructor at the end of your class if you’d like to have your pieces picked up by someone else or shipped to you. The price of shipping varies by state and the cost can be added to your total at checkout. If you signed up for pick up, but circumstances have changed, please fill out our contact form.
-
Grit Ceramic Studio kindly asks that all students silence all personal electronic devices during class. Please refrain from making phone calls during the class or if waiting inside the space as it can be very distracting to other students.
Students may take photos and videos of themselves or others in their party, but please do not take photos or videos of other students or instructors without their consent.
Learning how to work in ceramics can be difficult, messy, and sometimes frustrating, but also fun and deeply rewarding! Each of our instructors here at Grit Ceramics Studio has been working in clay for years, but we all started in the same place, right at the beginning. We ask that all students enter the space with an open mind and a willingness to make mistakes and learn. We are here for the art and for each other!

We share our parking lot with a couple other businesses, so sometimes (especially on weekends) things can get a little hectic here! If the lot is full, there is street parking on Harte Dr just around the corner.
Mini Classes

We'd love to! Our regular mini pottery classes are set up to teach up to 4-6 people. If you're interested in bringing more or arranging a special event, contact us here:

Grit Ceramics Studio will let students know when their pots are ready for pick up and will hold them for up to 4 months in the studio. After the 4 month window has passed, instructors will reach back out, reminding them of the pick up window, and that they have a grace period of 1 month until their pieces will have to be disposed of in the interest of maintaining open storage for the flow of work. Students may come and pick up pieces any time during our open hours, 12-4 Saturday and Sunday. If you would like to come in during the week, please contact us here.
-
Guests are welcome to bring something to drink, and we do recommend that students bring water bottles with them to class because making pottery can be thirsty work! However, it’s hard to eat while you’re covered in clay, so we suggest having a snack before or after your appointment.
While adults participating in pottery classes who are above the age of 21 are welcome to provide their own light alcoholic refreshment, we do request that imbibing is done within a respectable limit. Ceramics is a challenging art form that can very quickly become difficult when participants are intoxicated and drunken behavior can be a huge distraction for instructors and other students, as well as a potential hazard in a functioning studio.
We do offer special project based classes that are set up to be BYOB friendly! Take a look at our upcoming options here.

It is super common for beginner pieces to have small stress cracks on the bottoms and sides of pieces. As long as these do not go through to the inside of the pot, the pieces are still safe to hold food and drinks. Occasionally, pots may get larger cracks that will impact their ability to be food safe. Instructors work hard to ensure that pieces are made well and are taken care of to the best of their abilities from the start of a class until pieces are picked up by customers. It is rare, but if your piece is severely flawed your instructor may reach out and offer to make a copy so you can still walk away wth something functional.
-
In rare circumstances, a piece may be severely broken during the firing process. In these cases, the instructor will reach out to the student to ask if they would like the instructor to attempt a repair or create a replacement piece. Breakage is an unfortunate reality when working with clay, but we will do our best to stay true to your initial piece, or work with you to deliver something else you will love!
